Media Discourse Map on Anas Urbaningrum: A Framing Analysis of Neutrality, Conflict, and Sympathy on Detik.Com

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze how media framing of Anas Urbaningrum's freedom was conducted by Detik.com. Using a qualitative approach and Pan and Kosicki's framing analysis technique, this research examines six news articles published before, during, and after Anas' freedom from Sukamiskin Prison on April 11, 2023. The results showed that Detik.com framed the issue in three dominant patterns: positive framing, conflict framing, and sympathy framing. Positive framing was seen in the news coverage that emphasized Anas' social acceptance and support from loyalists. Conflict framing is evident in the highlighting of political tensions between Anas and the Democratic Party, as well as the criminalization narrative. Meanwhile, sympathy framing highlighted Anas' position as a victim of larger political dynamics and his post-release emotional distress. Although the coverage is generally neutral, Detik.com gives considerable space to narratives that build sympathy and rehabilitate Anas' political image. This research shows that the media not only conveys information, but also plays a role in shaping public perception through the selection of narratives, symbols and actors. The findings underscore the importance of media literacy in understanding agenda and framing in contemporary political reporting.
